About Carmen Sandiego


Carmen Sandiego began her criminal career in 1985 when Broderbund Software introduced its first Carmen game, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

early Carmen Carmen loves to plan and commit capers that no other thief would dream of. As the leader of VILE (the Villian's International League of Evil), she and her gang of rather bumbling crooks keep the ACME Detectives on their toes.

The Carmen software series helps children with history, geography, and recently, math and language arts skills. "Where in the World," "Where in the USA," and "Where in the World...Jr. Detective Edition" are the geography titles; "Where in Time"/"Great Chase through Time" (Where in Time's alternate name) is the history title; "World Detective" is the language arts title, and "Math Detective" is the mathamatics title. The wonderful award-winning series continues to grow each year with new titles and updated versions of old favorites. However, now the series of games once released by Broderbund Software is now being released by The Learning Company. The first title released by The Learning Company alone was "Carmen Sandiego's Think Quick Challenge" a multi or singular player quiz game. Both The Learning Company and Broderbund are now owned by Riverdeep.

Carmen herself has starred in 3 television shows. Two of the shows were game show format ones that aired on PBS. The first was Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? , and that aired from 1991 to the fall of 1996. It was follwed by Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? which aired until 1998.

animated CarmenIn February of 1994, Carmen appeared in an animated series that aired on the Fox Network for over 3 seasons (in later years it aired on both Fox Family Channel and Pax TV) entitled, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? . This Carmen was voiced by Rita Moreno, Animaniacs Cameo and the series won an Emmy in 1995.

Also, Carmen was the spokes character for Amtrak in the spring of 1998. She has even done a cameo on the show, Animaniacs in the episode, "Aquaintances."

Who knows where Carmen will turn up next! In fact, rumor has it, Carmen may be heading to the big screen in a couple of years!
